We’ve kept ourselves busy helping a disabled veteran and his family in a TV-produced project called “Military Makeover“. It was an honor to transform the home of Zeke, a Purple Heart recipient who survived a helicopter accident in Afghanistan, and transform his home in just a week! We want to thank Kephart Lawn & Landscape for installing a gutter and french drain, Western Specialty Contractors for filling cracks in the foundation, High Definition Drywall LLC. for repairing the drywall, and numerous other volunteers who donated their time and skill set for this deserving family in our community!
It’s almost time for our Rebuilding Day House Selection Meeting! At this meeting, Crew Leaders select their house(s) for Rebuilding Day, and receive contact information for the Homeowners. At Freedom House we feed the hungry, house the homeless, repair deplorable homes, give financial guidance, and provide utility assistance, hygiene kits, diapers, safety modifications and school supplies. We are able to advance our work because of our partnership with Freedom House and the ministries within its walls.
Here’s a spectacular video highlighting the work that has been done, and the organizations that have been positively impacted because of Freedom House!
We served 126 homes with 232 residents, plus 1 nonprofit facility housing 18 residents. This is the most families we have ever helped in a single year and was a major increase from 75 houses in 2015.
Marty Clariday started as a part-time Project Manager for us in February 2016. We liked him so much we hired him full-time in April! His skilled background and willingness to go the extra mile is a great asset to our team. Marty joins Ed Kephart as our two full-time Project Managers. Katie Raines joined us in July as our Director of Development. Katie specializes in all things digital, keeping our Facebook page up-to-date and bringing our staff’s average age down a decade or two! 😉
We helped a veteran avoid homelessness
Our biggest project of 2016 was for a veteran in Liberty who was in serious risk of losing his home. Our Project Managers and over 50 volunteers saved this man from homelessness, and provided him functional plumbing, electrical and weatherproofing. We worked on everything from a broken dishwasher to installing a new heating and cooling system.
This year we were thrilled to be a part of a demonstration focused on reducing hospital readmissions for former NKC Hospital patients . We installed grab bars, railings, bathroom assistive devices, low-rise steps and more to help aging adults stay safe and healthy in the comfort of their homes. Here’s a great video featuring this program, and the work we did for Jim Taylor:
Our annual Rebuilding Day was a success, with nearly 400 volunteers transforming the homes and lives of 23 families in the Northland! Churches, businesses and individuals installed new windows, trimmed trees, built new decks, painted exteriors and the list goes on!

What a successful Rebuilding Day we had on October 1st! We are fortunate for our mission to be featured in several different media outlets over the past several weeks.
KCTV5’s Natalie Davis aired a spectacular piece, summarized here: Volunteers come together to help those in need in Clay County
The Liberty Tribune’s Kellie Houx told our story here: Rebuilding Together Clay County Marks 15th Year
The Northland News wrote a story: Rebuilding Together Clay County Volunteers to Improve Living Conditions for Disadvantaged Homeowners
The Excelsior Springs Standard published a story, and the teaser can be found here: Rebuilding Together Offers a Hand When it’s Needed
We can’t express our gratitude enough for the volunteers that committed their time and expertise to our neighboring families in the Northland. Crew leaders worked weeks, even months in advance to recruit other volunteers, visit their project sites and prepare material lists. Groups that participated include:
