Thank You!

..is not enough to say for what you did.

“Repairing Homes – Rebuilding Lives!”

Thanks to you over 580 volunteers completed 598 home repair projects on 126 residential homes (and one non-profit facility) for 232 Northland residents in 2016.  On behalf of them, thank you for transforming their lives and restoring their dignity.

In 2017 we received a record 170 applications for service. Though our volunteers and Project Managers are working hard to complete many more home repair projects before Christmas, we anticipate carrying a Waiting List of 35 into the new year.

You see, even though we helped over 232 people last year, there are still many more in our neighborhoods and communities yet to be helped.

Vickie is a 70 year old widow who needed home safety modifications including grab bars, handrails, and a chair lift; here is her story:

“Thank you is not enough to say for what your organization did for me. I was scheduled for knee surgery, but my cancer has returned, so that has been cancelled. The chairlift and other repairs/safety modifications you have made will make my life easier and happier, I no longer have to be afraid as I go thru this 2nd round of chemo, because now I feel a lot safer and know that I can stay in my home of 41 years (God willing) for good.”

Every day, your support makes stories like Vickie’s possible.

We simply can’t do it without you.  Your support makes a real, lasting, and transformative impact in the lives of those who are still in need. Thank you for your continued support and friendship.

Largest International Day of Giving Back!

We are excited to announce that Rebuilding Together Kansas City is participating in the year’s largest international day of giving back: Giving Tuesday!

Following the popularity of shopping events, Black Friday, Shop Small Saturday and Cyber Monday, November 28th marks the holiday Giving Tuesday and kicks off the charitable giving holiday season.

Why are we doing this and why Rebuilding Together?

Rebuilding Together Kansas City is part of a national network of more than 140 affiliates around the country committed to providing a safe and healthy home for all of our neighbors. Over the past 30 years, the Rebuilding Together network has worked with nearly 4 million volunteers to repair almost 200,000 homes and community spaces, impacting nearly 6 million people. Help us do more in our community!

While we have accomplished so much, the need is great. More than 2.9 million of our neighbors are living in inadequate housing. Swelling home maintenance costs are driving residents and families away from communities where they have lived for generations. Rapidly aging housing stock is ill-equipped to accommodate the needs of an aging population. Veterans are returning home from decade-long conflicts, many with service-connected disabilities, to a severe lack of affordable housing that can accommodate their needs. Children growing up in low-income communities are living in antiquated housing, being exposed to dangerous toxins that adversely affect their health and educational attainment over the course of their lifetimes.

We rarely hear the stories of our neighbors in need and they are too quickly forgotten. Your support will help us strengthen our community, by helping our neighbors.

Support our community on November 28 by making a donation to RTKC — thru Facebook, use the donate button in the top right of our web page, or simply mail a check — to help meet our goal of $5,000. With your help we can strengthen the KC Northland.

On this global day of giving Facebook and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation are matching up to $2 million of funds raised on Facebook for U.S. nonprofits. Facebook is also waiving all fees for donations made to nonprofits on Facebook this #GivingTuesday.

If you have any questions about other ways to get involved, or to host your own RTKC fundraiser on Facebook, please contact RTKC Development Director, Stacie Bratcher.

Thank you for your generosity this holiday season.

RTKC Recognizes America Recycles Day 11/15

There are many actions each of us can take to reduce our environmental impact and support a clean community.  One of the easiest actions to take every day is to recycle.

That is why Rebuilding Together Kansas City (RTKC) invites the community to visit the RT Store on Wednesday, November 15, 2017, from 9am-5pm, at 1908 Plumbers Way, #300, Liberty, Missouri in recognition of America Recycles Day, a Keep America Beautiful national initiative.

Keep in mind that as a nation, we’re recycling and/or composting 34 percent of the 250 million tons of waste we generate, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.  Together we can certainly recycle more and recycle right.

There are many environmental and economic benefits of recycling, including saving energy, conserving natural resources, and reducing the need for landfill space. The RT Store is a home improvement thrift store dedicated to recycling, reusing, and re-purposing housing materials. We accept donations of new and used materials, and we encourage anyone to purchase from our store.  Our inventory includes modern and vintage building materials, tools, hardware, lighting, plumbing fixtures & appliances, as well as some architectural salvage and furniture. As an organization based on green principles, we enjoy fostering efforts to recycle, reuse, and repurpose housing materials.

Through the simple act of recycling (and buying recycled items), we can continue to build momentum for recycled materials, “giving our garbage another life.” At the RT Store, all proceeds support RTKC community service programs, providing sustainable revenue, as-well-as much needed equipment, supplies, and materials for home repairs and safety modification projects to improve the homes and lives of homeowners in need.

However, it all starts with putting more of the right recyclable items in the right place – and committing to do so today and into the future. The RT Store also hosts a weekly scrap metal drive, accepting all types of household nonferrous metal (like aluminum, copper, brass and wire) and ferrous metal (metal that sticks to a magnet like iron, steel and autos), at our Liberty facility.

With this in mind, and as America Recycles Day approaches on Nov. 15, RTKC and the RT Store wants to thank you for your efforts to recycle – at home, at work or school, and on the go. Join us in our effort to make the KC Northland environmentally and economically healthier by recycling more and recycling right.

HEROES AT HOME PROGRAM TEAMS UP WITH REBUILDING TOGETHER TO RENOVATE HOME FOR KANSAS CITY VETERAN

Volunteers shape up Northland home for former Marine.

Sears’ Heroes at Home program is partnering with Rebuilding Together Kansas City to renovate the home of a veteran who served in the U. S. Marines from 1973-1977 as a Fire Rescue Man in the Air Wing Division.  Most of his time was spent at the bases in Cherry Point, North Carolina, and Honolulu, Hawaii.  Unfortunately, he now suffers from debilitating injuries acquired through his military career and post-military employment.

This veteran’s life has been permanently changed by his injuries and disabilities.  Now 60 years old, and unable to work, he has been forced to solely survive on his disability check.  He does all he can to keep his house picked up and presentable, but his limited income does not enable him to make essential repairs.  He has lived in his house for 5 years, and he is frustrated that he is not physically able to complete the maintenance and repairs himself.

Roof leaks are causing interior damage, and dysfunctional gutters are causing increased deterioration to the siding.  Although he has some family in the area who are helpful with regular maintenance and upkeep, these big repair items are beyond his resources.

During a home visit, He said, “It would mean the world to me to have these repairs done for me.  It would take a load of worries off of my mind about how I’m ever going to keep my house from totally deteriorating and falling apart.”

Utilizing a layered approach, Rebuilding Together KC Volunteer Crews will provide repairs to his home, focusing on health and safety improvements that will enable this veteran to remain in his home for as long and as safely as possible, simultaneously preserving both well-being and quality of life.

Rebuilding Together affiliates nationwide bring together thousands of community volunteers each year, to provide free home repairs and modifications to low-income Americans – older adults, persons with disabilities, military veterans and families in need.

Over the last decade, the Heroes at Home program has raised over $21 million in support of Rebuilding Together’s and served 14,250 veterans across the country. Rebuilding Together affiliates and Sears’ Heroes at Home program will complete dozens of projects this fall, adding to the nearly 1,700 rebuilds completed since the program began.

Special Thanks to:

  • volunteers from the Bank of America for replacing the roof on October 7.
  • volunteers from The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company for replacing soffits, fascia, and siding on October 21.
  • Rick Miller of L & M Electric for replacing the electrical panel and updating wiring to make this veteran’s home safe.
  • RTKC Project Manager, Marty Clariday, for his efforts to bring this project to fruition.
  • Sears for their continued partnership and project funding.
  • our homeowner for his dedicated service to our country and our community.

You too can support this local veteran through our Heroes at Home project. Your donation will support critical program components including building materials and supplies, project management, and professional labor expenses. Thank you for your support.

A Challenge from RTKC Fund Development Director, Stacie Bratcher.

We are exactly one-week away from our annual Rebuilding Day BLITZ! Next Saturday, October 7, 400 volunteers will join together to make repairs to 25 homes across Clay County.

We are very excited about this event, but it got me to thinking…

How many of us take for granted our ability to make our own homes Safe & Healthy?

On any given day we might change a light bulb, plunge a toilet, tighten a screw, clean the lint trap, or pick up tripping hazards. Why? Because it’s important to keep our families safe and healthy.

Unfortunately, not all of our neighbors share this same ability.  Rebuilding Together Kansas City envisions a safe and healthy home for every person.  Will you help us accomplish this?

I challenge our staff members, our supporters – and YOU – to take the Safe & Healthy Home Challenge! Here’s how:

What: The Safe & Healthy Home Challenge

Who: Anyone who believes it is important to have a safe and healthy home

Where: Your own home

When: Oct 1-6, 2017

How:

    1. Record a fun, short video of yourself in continuous footage. First, announce your acceptance of the Safe & Healthy Home challenge, followed by performing a simple home repair, safety or maintenance task. Then nominate 2-3 other people to participate in the challenge.
    2. Post your video to Facebook with the following text:
      • “We all have so much to do to keep our homes safe and healthy…what if you couldn’t? Who would you call on? Where would you turn? @RebuildingTogetherKC strives to eliminate unsafe and unhealthy living conditions for disadvantaged families. Because a Safe & Healthy Home is important to me, I’m donating to @RebuildingTogetherKC to transform the homes and lives of my neighbors in need. I challenge (insert friends names here) to do the same.”
    3. Make a donation to RTKC to assist in improving the lives of your neighbors and loved ones by making their homes safe, warm, affordable, livable, and accessible. Your donation will make a world of difference. We promise you.

    4. Thanks for joining us for the Safe & Healthy Home Challenge!

This Safe at Home tub modification recently completed for a KC Northland Senior converted a tub from an existing 18″ exterior step-over and 12″ interior step-over to an easy 8″ exterior step-over and 1″ interior step-over. What a huge improvement! No more black eyes caused by falls for this homeowner.

Benefits of RTKC tub cut-outs include:

  • Enables easy step access for bathing
  • Installation completed on existing tub
  • Extremely cost effective in comparison to tearing out existing tub
  • Optional tub cut-out model has removable door that locks in place to use as traditional tub

For more information on our Safe at Home safety modifications contact our office at Info@RebuildingTogetherKC.org.

We’ve kept ourselves busy helping a disabled veteran and his family in a TV-produced project called “Military Makeover“. It was an honor to transform the home of Zeke, a Purple Heart recipient who survived a helicopter accident in Afghanistan, and transform his home in just a week! We want to thank Kephart Lawn & Landscape for installing a gutter and french drain, Western Specialty Contractors for filling cracks in the foundation, High Definition Drywall LLC. for repairing the drywall, and numerous other volunteers who donated their time and skill set for this deserving family in our community!

The family appears in a three-part series airing on Lifetime at 6:30am on June 9, June 23 and July 7.
Watch the first episode and hear an incredible story of what this veteran has overcome. We haven’t seen footage of our Rebuilding Together volunteers yet, but checkout the screenshot below that we grabbed from the scrolling credits!
